About Sports Injury Care

Expert Sports Injury Care for Athletes of Every Level

A sports injury is any musculoskeletal injury that occurs during athletic activity, exercise, or competition — from a weekend soccer match or pickleball game to high-school football, college rugby, or a long-distance run. These injuries range from mild sprains and strains to complete ligament tears, dislocations, and stress fractures that may require surgery.

Dr. Daniel Feghhi is a fellowship-trained orthopedic sports medicine surgeon with 12+ years of experience treating athletes across New Jersey. Whether you are a competitive athlete, a weekend warrior, or someone who simply wants to stay active without pain, the goal is the same — an accurate diagnosis, a clear treatment plan, and a safe, structured return to the sport you love.

Common Sports Injuries We Treat

Types of Sports Injuries

Common Sports Injuries by Body Part

Sports injuries affect the joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and bones most stressed during athletic activity. Dr. Feghhi treats the full spectrum of athletic injuries across the knee, shoulder, hip, and elbow.

Knee Sports Injuries

ACL Tears

Sudden pivot, cut, or jump landing. Often accompanied by a "pop" and rapid swelling.

Meniscus Tears

Twisting on a planted foot. Causes joint-line pain, locking, and swelling.

MCL & PCL Sprains

Valgus or hyperextension forces — common in football, wrestling, and skiing.

Patellar Dislocations

Kneecap pops out laterally — high recurrence in young athletes.

Shoulder Sports Injuries

Rotator Cuff Tears

Common in overhead athletes — baseball, swimming, tennis, and volleyball.

Shoulder Dislocations

Forced abduction/external rotation — common in football, rugby, and hockey.

Labral Tears (SLAP / Bankart)

Cartilage tears from repetitive throwing or traumatic dislocations.

AC Joint Separations

Direct fall onto the shoulder — common in cycling, hockey, and wrestling.

Hip & Groin Sports Injuries

Hip Labral Tears

Groin or hip pain in hockey, soccer, dance, and long-distance runners.

FAI (Femoroacetabular Impingement)

Bone overgrowth that limits motion and damages cartilage in active adults.

Hamstring Tears

Sprinters and field athletes — sudden sharp pain in the back of the thigh.

Sports Hernia / Athletic Pubalgia

Chronic groin pain from repetitive twisting and kicking — common in soccer and hockey.

Elbow Sports Injuries

UCL Injuries (Tommy John)

Valgus stress on the inside of the elbow — baseball pitchers, javelin, quarterbacks.

Tennis Elbow

Lateral epicondylitis from repetitive grip — tennis, pickleball, weightlifting.

Golfer's Elbow

Medial epicondylitis from repetitive wrist flexion — golf, baseball, climbing.

Distal Biceps Tendon Tears

Forced extension of a flexed elbow — weightlifters and contact athletes.

When to See a Specialist

Signs You Should See a Sports Injury Doctor

Many sports injuries can be managed with rest, ice, compression, and physical therapy. Some require prompt evaluation by an orthopedic sports medicine specialist to prevent long-term damage and speed recovery. If you experience any of the following, schedule an evaluation.

  • Heard or felt a "pop" at the moment of injury A classic sign of an ACL, meniscus, or tendon tear that warrants an MRI.
  • Rapid swelling within the first 24 hours Suggests bleeding inside the joint — often a ligament or cartilage injury.
  • Inability to bear weight on the leg or use the arm A red flag for fractures, complete ligament tears, or joint dislocations.
  • Visible joint deformity or dislocation The kneecap, shoulder, or elbow appears out of place — go to the ER immediately.
  • Locking, catching, or the joint "giving way" Mechanical symptoms often indicate a meniscus, labral, or cartilage tear.
  • Pain that does not resolve after 1-2 weeks of rest Lingering pain despite RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) needs imaging and diagnosis.

Diagnosis & Treatment

How Sports Injuries Are Diagnosed and Treated

Accurate diagnosis is the foundation of every successful sports injury treatment plan. Dr. Feghhi combines a careful exam, fast-track X-ray and MRI referrals, and a thorough review of imaging to confirm exactly what is injured — then walks you through every option before surgery is ever considered.

1

Detailed History & Mechanism

Dr. Feghhi starts with a focused history — how did it happen, what sport, what position, did you hear a pop, how quickly did it swell. This guides the entire workup.

2

Focused Physical Examination

Special tests (Lachman, McMurray, Neer, Hawkins, O'Brien) evaluate each ligament, tendon, and cartilage structure to pinpoint the injured tissue.

3

X-Ray & MRI Referrals

Same-day X-ray referrals rule out fractures. When soft-tissue injury is suspected, an MRI is ordered the same day to confirm the diagnosis and grade the injury.

Treatment Options for Sports Injuries

Non-Surgical Treatment

Most mild and many moderate sports injuries respond well to a structured, non-operative plan — especially when started early.

  • RICE protocol Rest, ice, elevation, and compression to control swelling and pain.
  • Physical therapy Sport-specific rehab to restore strength, range of motion, and proprioception.
  • Bracing and taping Functional braces for ACL, MCL, and patellar injuries during return-to-play.
  • Injections Cortisone for inflammation, PRP or viscosupplementation for select conditions.
  • Activity modification & return-to-play plan Gradual reintroduction with objective criteria before full competition.

Surgical Treatment

When non-surgical care is not enough — or when a complete tear demands restoration — minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery can get you back to your sport safely.

Recovery & Return to Sport

Return-to-Play Protocols

Returning to sport safely is more than just "feeling better." Dr. Feghhi follows evidence-based return-to-play protocols with objective strength, balance, and functional testing before clearing an athlete for full competition.

Phase 1: Acute Healing

  • • Control pain & swelling
  • • Protect the injured tissue
  • • Begin gentle range-of-motion
  • • Maintain non-injured fitness

Phase 2: Strength & Control

  • • Restore full range of motion
  • • Rebuild strength
  • • Begin proprioception drills
  • • Light sport-specific drills

Phase 3: Power & Agility

  • • Plyometrics & jumping
  • • Cutting and pivoting drills
  • • Sport-specific conditioning
  • • Functional testing

Phase 4: Return to Competition

  • • Pass return-to-sport testing
  • • Full-contact practice
  • • Gradual game reintroduction
  • • Continued prevention work

Objective Return-to-Play Testing

Before clearing an athlete for full return, Dr. Feghhi requires objective criteria — typically including isokinetic strength testing of the quadriceps and hamstrings (≥90% of the uninjured side), hop testing, Y-balance, and sport-specific functional assessments. This evidence-based approach dramatically reduces the risk of re-injury compared with returning based on time or pain alone.
