Knee Procedure
Expert meniscus repair surgery to restore knee function and get you back to an active lifestyle. Dr. Daniel Feghhi is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in minimally invasive meniscus repair procedures.
Meniscus repair surgery is a minimally invasive arthroscopic procedure designed to fix torn meniscus cartilage in the knee. Unlike meniscectomy (partial removal), meniscus repair preserves the entire meniscus, maintaining normal knee mechanics and preventing long-term complications like arthritis.
Dr. Daniel Feghhi, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in knee injuries, performs this procedure using advanced arthroscopic techniques. The surgery involves suturing the torn meniscus back together, allowing it to heal naturally over time.

Are You a Candidate?
Not all meniscus tears require surgery. Learn what factors determine if meniscus repair is right for you.
Meniscus repair is ideal for longitudinal tears, bucket-handle tears, and root tears in the vascular zone where healing is possible. Peripheral tears have the best healing potential.
Younger patients (under 40-50) typically have better healing capacity. However, age alone isn't disqualifying – overall knee health and tear characteristics matter more than chronological age.
Recent tears (within weeks to months) have higher healing success rates. Chronic degenerative tears may have less favorable repair outcomes, but evaluation is essential.
Athletes and active individuals seeking to return to sports benefit greatly from repair surgery that preserves meniscal function. The procedure is ideal for those wanting to maintain an active lifestyle.
If other knee injuries (like ACL tears) are present, they should be addressed simultaneously. Dr. Feghhi will evaluate overall knee stability and recommend combined procedures if necessary.
Successful meniscus repair requires patience – recovery takes 3-6 months. Patients must be willing to follow rehabilitation protocols strictly for optimal healing and return to activity.
Step by Step
Understanding the surgical procedure helps you feel confident and prepared for your treatment.
You will receive either general anesthesia or regional anesthesia (spinal) to ensure comfort during the procedure. The surgical team prepares the knee with antiseptic solution and positions the leg for optimal access.
Dr. Feghhi makes 2-3 small (5mm) incisions around the knee. Through these "portals," he inserts the arthroscope (camera) and specialized instruments to visualize and treat the tear.
The arthroscope provides magnified images of the meniscus tear. Dr. Feghhi evaluates the tear pattern, location, and quality of meniscal tissue. The tear edges are refreshed to promote healing.
Using specialized instruments, Dr. Feghhi passes sutures through the meniscus to approximate the torn edges. Various repair techniques may be used: inside-out, outside-in, or all-inside depending on tear location.
The portals are closed with sterile strips and adhesive. A soft dressing and possibly a knee brace are applied. The entire procedure typically takes 45-90 minutes depending on tear complexity.
